Coronavirus COVID-19 – update March 18

Rev. Rett Haselden

Brothers and Sisters of Grace,

As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the country and world, and as more and more efforts are made to mitigate the spread and impact of the disease, we must do our part and change our patterns and practices.

First, we will be holding worship online only, beginning this Sunday, March 22nd. This is in keeping with Bishop Holston’s most recent recommendations which you can read here. Our worship service will stream at both 8:30am and 11:00am. The online worship options we have are Facebook, YouTube, ROKU –  search for the Grace Columbia channel, and our website.

We also have online giving available here, and you can mail your offering to the church as well to help us continue to make Christ known as the COVID-19 response continues. We want to be flexible and ready to help in whatever ways we can and your continued participation and giving to our life of faith helps us to be able to do so.

Second, we will be suspending all other in person activities. As things change we will provide updates, and we will continue to look for ways to maintain our connection in love and faith to one another even as we find ourselves physically separated.

The quickest way we have to communicate with you is by email. If you have not been receiving emails from the church over the last few weeks please make sure that we have your current email address by calling the church office (803-732-1899) or emailing us at office@gracecolumbia.org or pastor@gracecolumbia.org. If you know of someone who does not have email or hasn’t been receiving our emails please let them know about this message or let me know so that I can contact them.

My cell phone number is 843-907-0608 for phone calls or text messages and you can email me at pastor@gracecolumbia.org. If you have a concern or need, please let me know.

Please also check on each other and care for each other as you all have proven you do so well. There is no substitute for the connection we share in Christ, so a phone call, FaceTime chat, card, or email to check on your brothers and sisters in Christ during this time of social distancing and isolation is vitally important.

God’s Grace and Peace,

Pastor Rett

Choral Scholars

Grace United Methodist Church is currently experiencing a trend that has been affecting churches all over the U.S. High schools and colleges are not producing trained singers to volunteer in church choirs in the high numbers that they once did, even ten years ago. Sadly, some churches have done away with their choirs altogether. At Grace, it is our goal to strive toward excellence in our music ministry and worship, led by the Chancel Choir, aided by choral scholars.

Choral Scholars are music students or in some cases young music graduates, who lead their respective sections in the choir.

Through a Choral Scholars program, Grace is able to invest in the lives and careers of young musicians who are either training for a career in Music or who are underemployed music graduates needing help in launching a music career. A Choral Scholars program is an outreach ministry to our community, and can help us achieve Grace’s 2020 vision of reaching out into our community.

Through this program, we are able to bring young musicians into our church and minister to them at a time in their lives when many young adults are unchurched. A Choral Scholars program also helps to train young musicians to be the church music leaders of the future. In fact, our own Mark Merritt was once a choral scholar.

We have received some seed money to assist in starting a Choral Scholars program at Grace. We believe that we could have choral scholars on all four parts in the choir for $900 per year, per singer.

Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Grace United Methodist Church Receives 2020 Best of Columbia Award

Columbia Award Program Honors the Achievement

COLUMBIA January 8, 2020 — Grace United Methodist Church has been selected for the 2020 Best of Columbia Award in the Places of Worship category by the Columbia Award Program.

Each year, the Columbia Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Columbia area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2020 Columbia Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Columbia Award Program and data provided by third parties.

Rev. Rett Haselden

I am overjoyed to be a part of the ministry and mission of Grace on Harbison. God has called me to preach the truth of the Gospel so that others might know the love and justice of Jesus Christ and be agents of his grace in their families and communities. I was born and raised in Murrells Inlet, SC and grew up attending Socastee UMC. I earned a BA in Religious Studies with a minor in history at the University of South Carolina. I received my MDiv from Duke Divinity School in May of 2010, began my ministry on July 1, 2010, and was ordained an Elder in June of 2012 at the SC Annual Conference. Prior to serving at Grace, I served as associate pastor at St. John’s UMC in Rock Hill. I enjoy spending time at the beach. The salt water always restores me. I am a gym rat, but that is mainly to support my love of good food.

I share my life and ministry with my wife, Lollie, and our sons, Wyatt and Thomas. Lollie is a South Carolina native as well, having grown up in Marion, SC. She has a deep call to lay ministry in the administration of the church at the denominational level. Wyatt and Thomas bring the most joy to our lives with their boundless energy and excitement. They love sports, superheroes, and reading. We all enjoy Gamecock football, the outdoors, grilling, going to community events, and experiencing new adventures together.
