Obituary of Salena Ann Doidge

IRMO – Celebration of Life services for Salena Ann Doidge, 61, of Irmo, S.C., will be held Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Grace United Methodist Church.

The family will hold two services due to certain gathering restrictions. The first service will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the second service will be held at 2:00 pm. Proper precautions are being taken and masks are required. The family will receive friends in the outdoor spaces following the service. The services will also be lived streamed at gracecolumbia.org.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Doidge died Monday, December 28, 2020. Born in Fort Pierce, FL, she was a daughter of Norma Joyce Cail Wilson of Vero Beach, FL and the late John Dean Richardson. She was currently employed as a customer service manager at Food Lion which is where she has been for the last 21 years. She also has an extensive history in the childcare industry. She loved all of her “adopted” kids dearly. She was an avid member of Grace United Methodist Church. She really enjoyed traveling and spending time with her beloved family. Her family was her heart and soul. Surviving are her husband, Jeffery A. Doidge of Irmo; daughters, Stephanie Smith (Tim) of Chattanooga, TN, Jennifer Locklair (Mitch) of Chapin, S.C., and Terra Campos (Rod) of Spartanburg, S.C.; sisters, Bonnie Smith of Vero Beach, FL and Charlee Martin of Pittsburg, KS; brother, Johnny Richardson of Mobile, AL; and 10 beloved grandchildren who knew her as “Maw Maw.”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Grace United Methodist Church located at 410 Harbison Blvd, Columbia, SC 29212 in her memory. The family also requests that everyone where bright colors to the service, in particular, purple which was her favorite.

Outreach Opportunity with Simple Gifts

Grace Outreach will be providing a simple gift (i.e. word search, crossword, Sudoku or coloring books and pencils) and note to some of our Grace neighbors in the coming weeks.

We want to let them know that we are thinking and praying for them during this time of social distancing and isolation.

If you would like to contribute toward this effort, please give online or by check and note that it is for Outreach.

Choral Scholars

Grace United Methodist Church is currently experiencing a trend that has been affecting churches all over the U.S. High schools and colleges are not producing trained singers to volunteer in church choirs in the high numbers that they once did, even ten years ago. Sadly, some churches have done away with their choirs altogether. At Grace, it is our goal to strive toward excellence in our music ministry and worship, led by the Chancel Choir, aided by choral scholars.

Choral Scholars are music students or in some cases young music graduates, who lead their respective sections in the choir.

Through a Choral Scholars program, Grace is able to invest in the lives and careers of young musicians who are either training for a career in Music or who are underemployed music graduates needing help in launching a music career. A Choral Scholars program is an outreach ministry to our community, and can help us achieve Grace’s 2020 vision of reaching out into our community.

Through this program, we are able to bring young musicians into our church and minister to them at a time in their lives when many young adults are unchurched. A Choral Scholars program also helps to train young musicians to be the church music leaders of the future. In fact, our own Mark Merritt was once a choral scholar.

We have received some seed money to assist in starting a Choral Scholars program at Grace. We believe that we could have choral scholars on all four parts in the choir for $900 per year, per singer.
